Our multi-award winning village shop has been run by the community for 7 years (since November 1st 2009). And when we say the community we really mean a team of trusty volunteers. During this time, when the shop’s been open 7 mornings a week, people have been doing so much more than just serving behind the counter. There are the cash and carry runs, weekly bread baking in the Village Hall, autumn apple juicing weekends and more all run by a dedicated group of people from all over Humshaugh, who give however much time they can spare.
Now the team is planning to boost its numbers by inviting you to join in. Perhaps you’re new to the village and would like to become involved and make new friends or maybe you are now in a position spare an hour or two a week to help out. You only need to talk to the current team to find out about the warm glow you get from making a small contribution to your friendly community.
Humshaugh Community Ventures Limited, which runs the shop, is also looking for a Treasurer. So, if you have the relevant skills, HCVL would be delighted to hear from you. The treasurer is helped by other volunteers who deal with cash handling, newspaper vouchers, accounts and so on.
HCVL is having its annual general meeting on Friday November 4th 2016 so that’s an ideal opportunity to find out more about the great work that’s being done for your village. In the meantime, have a chat to one of the directors or volunteers about how you could help. They’re an enthusiastic bunch and they’d love to have you on board or even on the board too. The Secretary is Jack Chown, firstname.lastname@example.org, tel 689218.
Because it’s a not-for-profit business, Humshaugh Village Shop has helped to support so many projects in and around the village. Individuals and organisations have benefited from funds. For example, students have received help for their studies or transport costs, Humshaugh Arts Projects and Humshaugh Theatre Group have been helped to stage events, and the Village Hall has a new kitchen and windows as well as electric car charging points.
The shop has won countless awards and this year it received the crowning glory – the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for volunteer groups. Come and join us and see what all the fuss is about. You won’t regret it.
